☼ Definition :–
The demonstrative adjectives ‘a’, ‘an’ and ‘the’ are called articles. They are of two kinds :
- Indefinite article a, an
- Definite article The
⟹ Indefinite article ( a ) :–
The indefinite article ‘a’ comes before a countable noun starting with a consonant sound.
e.g. (i) She has a basket.
(ii) There is a university in America.
⟹ Indefinite article ( an ) :–
The indefinite article ‘an’ comes before a countable noun starting with a vowel sound.
e.g. (i) She is an M.L.A.
(ii) Mahesh has an apple.
⟹ Definite article ( The ) :–
The indefinite article ‘the’ comes
(1) Before superlatives,
e.g. Govind is the tallest boy in the class.
(2) Before adjectives,
e.g. The rich will serve the poor.
(3) Before adverbs,
e.g. The better you think, the wiser you will become.
(4) Before some proper names,
e.g. The Godavari, The Narmada, The Ganga.
(5) Before the names of holy books,
e.g. The Vedas, The Mahabharat, The Geeta.
(6) Before the names of unique things,
e.g. The earth, The sun, The moon etc.
(7) ‘The’ is used to denote particular persons or things.
e.g. The girl, you met yesterday is my friend.
(8) ‘The’ is used to denote proper noun used in common noun.
e.g. Kalidas is the Shakespeare of India.
(9) ‘The’ is used to denote directions.
e.g. The east, The west, The north, etc.
(10) ‘The’ is also used to denote the names of newspaper, countries, historical places, historical events, trains, ships, nationalities etc.
e.g. (i) The “Gujarat Samachar”, The “Times of India”, etc.
(ii) The united states etc.
(iii) The industrial revolution etc.
(iv) The Victoria, The Tamilnadu Express.
(v) The Indians, The Sikhs etc.
