■ Rule : In the denominator, put 1 under the decimal point and annex with it as many zeros as is the number of digits after the decimal point. Now, remove the decimal point and reduce the fraction to lowest terms.
e.g. Convert (i) 0.75 and (ii) 2.008 into vulgar fractions.
Soln. (i) 0.75 = = (ii) 2.008 = = =
■ Remark : The given numbers are so placed under each other that the decimal point lie in column. Now, the numbers can be added or subtracted as usual, putting the decimal point under the decimal points and blanks are covered with zeros.
e.g. (i) 51.7 + 6.074 + .31 + .4 = ? (ii) 5.071 – 3.51 = ?
Solution.
(i) 51 . 700 (ii) 5.071
+ 6.074 –
+ 0.310
